Lab-grown Ruby
Lab-grown rubies are gemstones synthesized in an artificially controlled environment by simulating the geological conditions for the formation of natural rubies. Their chemical composition is the same as that of natural rubies (Al₂O₃). They appear red due to the presence of chromium elements, but their growth process is completely carried out in the laboratory and has the following characteristics:
I. Synthesis Methods and Technological Progress
Verneuil Method
Principle: Mix aluminum oxide powder with a colorant (such as chromium oxide), heat it to a melting state at a temperature above 2000°C through a hydrogen-oxygen flame, and then let it drip onto a rotating base and solidify layer by layer to form crystals.
Flux Method
Principle: Dissolve aluminum oxide in a flux (such as lead borate) at a high temperature (1300 - 1600°C), and then cool it slowly to make the crystals precipitate.
Characteristics: The crystals are closer to natural rubies, containing platinum flakes or flux residues, and are often used in high-end jewelry.
Hydrothermal Method
Principle: Use an aqueous solution as a medium in an autoclave to simulate the underground hydrothermal environment, enabling rubies to grow on the seed crystals.
II. In the Field of Jewelry
Jewelry Inlay: Lab-grown rubies have become the mainstream choice to replace natural gemstones due to their bright colors and affordable prices.
III. Environmental Protection and Sustainability
Reduced Mining: Lab-grown rubies do not require the destruction of the ecological environment of mining areas. For example, in places like Mogok in Myanmar, excessive mining has led to environmental degradation.
Energy Consumption: Some enterprises use green energy sources (such as solar energy) for production, reducing carbon emissions.
Circular Economy: Ruby scraps can be reused through regeneration technology, reducing resource waste.
